Our vision
CEI’s Innovate activities form an essential link in the Limburg entrepreneurial and innovation landscape, where the role of the university as a strategic partner cannot be underestimated. Within this dynamic ecosystem, CEI takes a proactive position in supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and family businesses in developing new products, services, and business models. This enables these companies to better adapt to rapidly changing market conditions, increasing competition, and the growing pressure to become more sustainable. The connection between academic knowledge and practice-oriented application creates a powerful symbiosis: knowledge development does not take place solely in an ivory tower, but is actively translated into real-world impact for the region and its entrepreneurs.

Thanks to the close collaboration between CEI, the university, and various regional stakeholders, including public authorities, industry associations, knowledge institutions, and financial partners, multidisciplinary networks emerge that provide SMEs and family businesses with access to a broader knowledge base, market insights, and funding opportunities. CEI acts as a catalyst in this process: bringing parties together, facilitating knowledge transfer, and identifying promising collaborative projects. In this way, companies can benefit from the latest technological developments in areas such as digitalisation, data analytics, robotics, circularity, and sustainable energy solutions.

This ecosystem creates an environment in which talent is attracted, developed, and retained. Students can directly apply their knowledge within regional companies, which not only results in fresh perspectives and new ideas but also strengthens the alignment between education and practice. This interaction between science, entrepreneurship, and practical experience lays the foundation for sustainable economic growth in Limburg.

With the appointment of Rim Stroeks as SME Lead, CEI took its first steps in 2024 towards realising this ecosystem and looks forward to further developing it together with its partners in 2025.​
Projects
Nationaal Plan Heerlen Noord
In het kader van het langjarige Nationaal Plan Heerlen Noord is CEI gevraagd een onderzoek te doen hoe ondernemers in deze wijken het ondernemerschap ervaren, hoe zij bijdragen aan de leefbaarheid van hun wijk, hoe zij de wijk gedurende hun ondernemerschap hebben zien veranderen, welke kansen en bedreigingen zij voor de buurt zien, etc.
GRENZLAB INTERNATIONAL DEAL
Samenwerkingsverband met het Fontys Lectoraat Cross Border Business Development in het kader van de RegioDeal Noord-Limburg. Het project is gericht op MKB bedrijven in Noord Limburg en bestaat uit drie activiteiten. Zo worden er ‘keukentafelgesprekken’ gevoerd met ondernemers waarbij thema’s als strategie, innovatie en internationalisering centraal staan. Ook worden er masterclasses georganiseerd voor ondernemers die de eerder genoemde thema’s verder willen uitdiepen. Tenslotte wordt er een zelflerende community vormgegeven die ook na de projectperiode werkt aan concrete oplossingen als antwoord op de behoeftes die ondernemers in de regio hebben.
YUFE / Inno4YUFE
​YUFE is the "Young Universities for the Future of Europe", an alliance of 10 universities with the aim of creating 1 European university. As CEI we contribute to this alliance by adding to their entrepreneurial course and project portfolio.
KLIK OP MORGEN
In opdracht van de Klik-op-Morgen projectpartner Brightlands Smart Services Campus hebben wij in 2025 tientallen gesprekken gevoerd met ondernemers uit de Limburgse maak-industrie. Doel daarvan was niet alleen deze ondernemers te wijzen op de mogelijkheden binnen het Klik-op-Morgen programma (een subsidieprogramma waarvan bedrijven gebruik kunnen maken bij het helder krijgen van hun digitaliseringsbehoefte), maar ook eventuele onzekerheden, behoeftes en vragen op het gebied van digitalisering met hen te bespreken.
DIGIMACH
3- jarig Interreg project voor de regio Maas-Rijn (DE, BE, NL) dat zich richt op de ondersteuning en begeleiding van specifiek de verspanende (metaalbewerkende) industrie in de euregio. Doelstelling is om deze doelgroep de volgende stap te laten zetten naar meer digitale en datagedreven productie door de inzet van AI en IOT-tools. Deelnemende bedrijven krijgen toegang tot bestaande en nieuwe digitale tools waarmee zij laagdrempelig kunnen experimenteren om vervolgens samen use-cases te ontwikkelen en demonstratiemodellen in de praktijk te testen. Vanuit de UM zijn naast CEI ook BISS en DACS bij dit project betrokken.
Regio Parkstad International Deal
The focus of the International Deal in Regio Parkstad is to build strategic, innovative and internationalization competencies within SMEs. Given market opportunities on the other side of the (very close) border in that region firms could benefit from their proximity to the border and see it as an opportunity rather than a insurmountable barrier.
